Merchant Loan Advance has learned that the hotel from Fawlty Towers has been sold by the agent Savills at a value of circa £1.5 million.
The iconic Hotel Gelneagles in Torquay was made famous by the show and is now engraved in the hearts of many fans who revisit the show on TV year on year. Fawlty Towers had a long list of British actors who played various roles but the main character relationships of John Cleese (Basil Fawlty), Prunella Scales (Sybil) and Andrew Sachs (Manuel) would become as the BBC put it ‘their jewel in the comedy crown’ and last in our hearts for ever more.

Basil’s escapades amongst other nervous breakdowns included trying to keep a rat away from a hotel inspector, hiding a dead body of a guest, falling out with German tourists, beating a poor loveable Manuel to a pulp (on many occasions) and thrashing his car with a tree in the high street.
The boutique hotel 42-bedroom on Lyme Bay, Torquay closed permanently in January to make way for a range of retirement flats.
We wonder if the echoes of classic lines such as ‘Basil!’ and ‘Don’t mention the war’ will haunt the re-development.
